I have searched and searched for a for sure answer on which model my 1940 2door Chevy is. I would greatly if someone could tell me a way to know which model my Chevy is. Sorry if this is an elementary question I'm new to having and working on antique cars. Thanks for your time and responses in advance.

Hi, Welcome to the forum.
Basically if the trunk hinges are external, it's a coupe.
Internal and it's a sedan.
To be more specific wheel need the numbers off the Body Tag that's riveted to the firewall.
Or go to chevy.oldmanualproject.com and search there.
Cheers,

To be more correct, in 1940, ALL passenger cars had external chrome trunk hinges. The sedan model had a relatively short hinge length which bolted to the body - maybe about 2 inches in length. On the coupe models and convertible, the body part of the hinge is 4 inches in overall length and the part attached to the trunk / deck lid is 6 inches in overall length.

1940 passenger cars came in 3 different models.
Master 85 had a straight axle for the front suspension.
Master Deluxe had the typical "modern" coil springs in the front. There is NO stainless trim around the windshield, windows or on the body moulding on the sides of the car.
Special Deluxe also has coil spring suspension in the front. It had the stainless around the windshield, side body mouldings, stainless window trim, etc.

I really appreciate all the fast responses thanks a ton. Well I know I don't have the 85 because of the coils. I'll have to look more in depth around windshields and stuff because the previous owner painted over all the chrome and stainless parts on the car. Tomorrow in the daytime I'm going to take a look at the firewall for the tag. Once again I'm new to this stuff so I appreciate the patience

Here is more information than you could imagine, regarding your 1940, from GM HERITAGE.

Scrolling down you will find model information and serial number information.

A good reference for you.

Well this is what the tag on the firewall had on it. The style number and model number doesn't have the letters I've seen on others maybe you guys have though.

a little info
Plus the number stamped on the engine block, to the left of the distributor would help.

40-1511
The number 40 obviously means the year 1940
The number 15 means that it is a Master Deluxe. That means no stainless around the windshield or down the side of the car at the belt-line. It also means that it has coil springs on the front and is called knee-action suspension.
The number 11 means it is a Town Sedan.

Paint 266 means that it was painted Harbor Blue originally.
