I see these sponge rubber seals at a few of the usual sources...
$39 sure seems high!!!
In a coupe they will never be seen once the wood floor is reinstalled...
Is there a cheaper alternative?????????
Its a donut... 3 3/4 dia... one inch thick with a 1 3/8 hole in the middle...
One seals the fuel outlet and the other the drain plug...
They need to be there.. but seems there should be some $5-10 option...

I would assume that one reason for the $$$ is the sponge material is chemical & weather resistant....maybe Tiny will chime in on this.

I made my own using an Ace Hardware kneeling pad & two toilet tank seals. I bonded them together and they work like a charm. ![[Linked Image from i47.photobucket.com]](http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f167/Tinys1938/Im001322.jpg)

I didn't measure. I bought the tank seals but they weren't thick enough. I was looking for alternatives to the grossly high prices of the repops as your discovered. I saw them as I was walking through the hardware store & thought that they looked very similar to the repop seals the vendors sell. When I found out they weren't thick enough I started looking for something to glue to them to make them thicker. I saw the wife's kneeling pad in the garage and I "borrowed" it. They fit the holes & do the job. They may or may not be the same size as the originals but, as you said, no one will ever see them. They are pretty close size wise to the remnants of the original seals but I never put a tape measure to them. The seals in the hardware store were only about a half inch thick. Your hardware store may be better stocked & have seals thick enough that you won't need to make them thicker.

Perfect....
Just the sort of answer I was seeking...
The tank just had the RENU process done to it...
Found some 60s Vette tank strap cushions that will work fine...
Button it up and no one will ever know!

In case anyone follows this thread....
After a trip to Home Depot I found it would take over $20 and some work to get something almost right...
Bit the bullet and got the correct pair of parts from Steele....
FYI: Chevs of the 40's had it for $39.25 Steele had it for $39.10
But Steele was much better on shipping.... $11.70
40's wanted $16.66
