There is a fellow at my work who is trying to stump some of us with the following question: Where is the radio antenna located on a 1953 Corvette? I haven't the foggiest as it does not appear on any of the photos I have. Can anyone let me know where the antenna is on the '53 Corvette?

Hi R, Martin,

The 1953-54 and 55 Corvettes all used a steel screen as an antenna.

The first screen type antenna was installed in the 1933 line of vehicles at the assembly plant and was located in the center portion of the roof.

Starting in 1956 a disappearing mount antenna was used and it was mounted on the left rear 1/4.

More trivia: All Corvette radios were either Wonder Bar (electronic tuning) or AM/FM for many years. The first Chevrolet WB was the 1953 Corvette. The car did not get a WB until 1955. The early Corvette radios were 6-volt until the conversion to 12-volt in 1955 by both lines of vehicles.

Thanks for the info. On a '53 Corvette, where did they hide the screen antenna? The grille, maybe?

Specificly, the mesh antenna on 53-54 Vettes was imbedded in the trunk lid between glass ply's.

Thanks Ron,

You beat me to the answer.

Interference was a major problem with the Corvettes because of the fiberglass body. Extensive shielding of the engine was necessary.
