The manual isn't very clear on this, but I take it you are supposed to leave the spacer tool between the pinion gear and the bearing as you tighten the front bearing retainer bolts?

Well, I tried leaving the tool in there, and then tightening the double roller bearing retaining bolts, but that just binds the tool between the bearing and the pinion gear, leaving you unable to remove it. Perhaps the tool is used to protect the bearing from damage as you "tap" the bearings into their bores. Anyway, remove the tool, tighten the bolts, and all is well

When the rear pinion bearing is installed on the pinion gear shaft, it has about 1/8" lateral movement on the shaft. The purpose of the spacer tool is to cause the rear pinion bearing to be forced further into its bore as the pinion gear is tapped into its final position. The spacer tool insures that there is about 1/8" clearance (the thickness of the tool) between the forward face of the pinion gear and the outer race of the pinion bearing. If the spacer tool is not used in installing the pinion, the forward face of the pinion gear will rub on the outer race of the pinion bearing. When installing the pinion with the spacer tool in place, once the pinion is tapped down into its final position, the tool can be removed and the forward pinion bearing lock ring bolts tightened.

Mark that's an excellent explanation and I can verify from experience that the bearing will not seat without the tool (or other means) of properly seating the bearing.

Right side of the picture is the bearing spacer tool I made from a Progessive suspension motorcycle shock adjustment tool. The spanner wrench at the left side of the picture I made from a different shock adjusting tool

Nice work on the D.I.Y. tools.

Very clear explanation by Mark, as to the function of the spacer tool.

With the spacer tool, all will work well ..... without the tool in place, end result could have negative results. dance
