Hi,
I am looking for some advice on steering boxes. The FS does not do rebuild kits, just some bearings/bushes. Would just replacing bushes & bearings probably be enough?

Obviously I would not know until it has been stripped ( which is a job for winter) but as I live in UK I would want to get what parts would be needed in advance.

I got some good info from Peterz a few weeks ago and having adjusted the toe in (which was pretty well toe OUT), things are a little better.

I have also found that the tie rod ( between the two front wheels) is bent, presumably from hitting rocks, but I think that can be straightened.

Any advice re steering boxes would be welcome.

After straightening the tie rod you will need to re-adjust the toe again. How much play is in the steering wheel? If you can adjust the box to take out most free play when the steering wheel is in the center and it does not bind when turned fully to either side then chances are good that only seals and bearings will be needed. On the other hand if it is necessary to have considerable play in the center to keep it from binding when turned fully to either side then the gears are most likely worn past use.

I try to find bearing for steering box on my 1930 and are no longer manufactured or sold, so I buy 51204 thrust bearing, I machined within the steering box to mount the bearing (on the side of the direction and the side of the screw). When mounting the bearing touching the gear so I manufacture a tool to hold the bearing on the machine tool, then I lower the outer diameter of the bearing and I give him an angle to make it spherical as the oem bearing, I use a grinder to machine it because the bearing was too hard for carbide inserts. The steering box function very well and reacted very well no play or stiffness .
