The front brakes on my ’35 Master have been giving me trouble recently. Keep in mind this is the last year for mechanical brakes. When first starting out one or the other front brake will grab and bind, nearly yanking the steering wheel out of my hand. Once stopped the offending brake will release with a ”˜clunk’. After several stops the problem lessens which may be due to brake fade but this is only a guess. However, close inspection of the linings doesn’t indicate any areas that are worn or glazed due to rubbing. All mechanical components appear to be in good working order. The brakes worked well for quite a few years but this binding issue is new this year.
For background, the drums were ground years ago to lessen the out of round common with these steel drums. The linings are NOS asbestos and were professionally installed on the shoes. Linings are secure to the shoe. I also took the bold step of actually adjusting the brakes according to the manual (!) which helped for a while but hasn’t cured it. Again yesterday I took everything apart and this time I put a lock washer on the ”˜centering’ nut as I thought perhaps the mechanism was slipping after adjustment. The brake return spring is good but I also thought the brake spring (5.026) that holds the two shoes together was a bit weak. Filling Station doesn’t carry this spring…anyone know where I can get two? I welcome any advice you can offer. Thanks in advance!

The linings are NOS asbestos...... Are the linings actual woven linings for mechanical brakes?

Yes, I believe so. It's been years since I bought them as NOS replacements and had them riveted on. Strange thing is I've driven the car for several thousand miles since getting it back on the road and never had this problem until recently. I can't figure out what changed or why it's a problem now.

Sand the linings and drum surface. The linings are glazed. Had to do this on my '39 alost every year.

Thanks Gene! The linings don't appear to be glazed but it's worth a try. And yes, I'll do it outside while wearing a respirator. I may not get to it this week but I'll let you know how it goes when I get to it.

Chevrolet did not use woven lining material in 1934 and 1935. I had moulded in my " 34 and had good brakes.
