My '51 has the recirculating heater - the one with the fan switch marked "heat" below the headlight knob, no knobs on the dash. The switch has three or four positions, but only one of them is working. I'm assuming one of the positions is "off" but I don't know which one it is. I was fooling with the headlight switch the other night, and there was quite a bit of heat coming from the back of the blower switch (burned a finger on it). No instructions for this heater in the car paperwork. Can someone tell me what the switch positions are?

All the way left should be off to the right is various speeds. Seeing the switch was hot the heater motor was on and passably not turning it might like to be oiled. Al

If the resistor is mounted on the back of the switch (they usually are) that may be what is producing the heat.

I'm assuming one of the positions is "off" but I don't know which one it is. You can use an Ohm meter to determine in which position the switch is off.

This is not a left/right switch. It is up/down. I'm assuming up is off. Saw one in a truck at the Gettysburg meet today that was in that position.

I have the same sw,on my 54 chevy. ( its red in color) all the way up is the off postion, next click down is high speed, here the resistor may be little warm ,next click down be mid.speed, resistor be hotter.. all way down is slowest speed here the resistor will be hot..but you need to see if it runs ok at the run position ,if not motor may be bad or the sw may be.

All genuine chevrolet heaters were gray from 1950 and up. 1949's were brown to match the interior colors.

I have that same switch on my '50. It seems like both the top and bottom positions are off, and the two middle positions run the fan at two different speeds.
Those accustomed to the finest...find it in Chevrolet. 1953 Belair Convertible 1951 2dr Deluxe Sedan 2015 GMC SLE 4X4

check your switch as it sounds as though one of the resistors is burnt out.
