My 30 coupe has been running fine. Today she was idling a poped thru the carb but kept running and then popped thru the carb again and stalled and will not start. Checked all the usual things but no good any ideas.

You have two items to check. First, we need to know if you are getting any spark. That is the electrical side. Then we need to know if you are getting a smooth flow of fuel. Check for those two items, and get back to us. PS: If you need instructions on how to do either one----let us know and we will help.

Fuel ok, but no spark from the coil. Going to check the wiring to the coil. What is best way to see if the coil is getting power.

The fastest way is to remove the positive coil wire, turn on the ignition switch and then strike the positive wire across a grounding point on the engine or base of the coil. If you get a spark you have power.

If you don't have a spark when striking the positive wire to a ground then check the ignition switch. Test light or volt/ohm meter are better than sparking. But sparking works. If switch is okay then the wiring. It is necessary to have power to the coil, then the points to have power to spark plugs.

Did you see if the points are glazed? Sounds weird, but I have had this happen on my old cars if they do not get used much. I just rub some sand paper across the points and that sometimes hels Not to scientific but just a suggestion.

I have had the same problem. Almost new points, car sits over winter and will not start in Spring. Points stll look new. Run a point file gently through them and engine starts.

Definitely check the ignition switch. I just discovered a bad contact in mine causing intermittent engine failure. See my post on Sudden Engine Failure. This time (after replacing a bad coil and a ground in the dist) it was the + coil terminal on the switch that was bad. I only found it after by jiggling the wires under the dash while driving. Engine would begin to die then restart depending on how much I jiggled the wires. I immediately replaced the switch with a universal switch and ran the negative coil wire direct to the distributor. Not original but heck, I get to where I'm going and I don't have to upgrade my AAA towing package . I can get the Electrolock rebuilt at a later date….
If it ain't broke…..fix it 'til it is.
