The placement of the timing and cam gear marking is in relation to each other and has no correlation with any other marks on the engine. Once the cam and timing gears are mated you move on to the next step which is the adjustment of the valves and then the flywheel ball and the pointer.

Sorry I don't have an engine that I can check to see which teeth on the cam and crank gears align. My gut tells me that you are likely right but it also says if you are one tooth off the engine will not run correctly. Hopefully someone that has NOS gears can count the teeth to the correct mark. Or gears on a running engine.

FYI, The 1928 Service News has a short blurb on checking the cam/crank gear alignment because there were mis-marked gears available in that time.

The crank gear has a "dot" on the tooth that must line up with the "dot" between the teeth on the cam gear.
The picture in the 1934 shop manual shows the "dot" as beinging four teeth from the key way slot.
The 1935 cam timing was revised and a different crank gear used. Would be best to see what the 1935 shop manual shows.

Rossco,

I have an original (not copy) 1935 Chevy shop manual as well as a NOS camshaft gear. If there is some quote from the manual or photo of the gear that would be helpful let me know,
