I have two starters that are for my 1933 Chevy 5 window Master. They both run. I've checked the mechanism that engages the flywheel. Both seem to work properly. However the mechanism does not engage with the fly wheel. One makes a terrible grinding sound the other no sound. My guess is that the mechanism is not traveling in enough to catch the flywheel gear. I've had one or both starters in the car 6 times and no solution.
Any suggestions.

The 33 is so close to running.

Thanks Don East

I do not know that much but how are the teeth on the drive gears and the flywheel. Have you tried running the started with jumper cables on a workbench to see if both starter bendix's are bring the starter gear out all the way.

I had that on my 1936's. It would not spring all the way out, even though it ran. On the one that grinds, it appears to go all the way out but is weak and will not under "work load" conditions. No amount of oil or grease would make it work. I found out that it did not have enough power to pull it into the flywheel gears. Just go to the gear ring and hit it but not "pull" in to place. I had it in and out of the truck and on the car, too. I got a new bendix for both of them (I was restoring at the time). Problem solved. Good luck I hope this helps you.

In another post Doneast has determined that he has the wrong flywheel so engagement is not his problem.

Beatles, "WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS" The 33 engine is free. With all the suggestion I decided to make a list and go over everything again.
Sticky lifters, stuck valve, lube everything again cylinders, valve lifters, make sure valves do not stic. etc. Check the started again. On close examination it looked like the clearance between the end of the Bendix collar and the ring gear were too close. Take the starter out and try the crank. It turned. After much jumping up and down and making explanations I realized what had happened. The "wrong" ring gear must have a greater diameter that the correct flywheel. I'll check this when I get the replacement flywheel. I have found a person in Colorado who has one. Jump up and down again.
Bottom Line thanks to all
