I'm going to replace the exhaust system on a 1950.Where can I get the tailpipe like the original?I think I can get the rest of the system from a local muffler shop.

I had a tail pipe made up at a local muffler shop for my '50.They had the bending specs on file. They even flatened the rear end like the original. This was necessary as I have the accessory tail pipe extention and it clamps to the flat shape and the rear hanger is flat..Most muffler shops today use the aluminized tubing. It stays new looking rather than getting rusty and should last for 20 years.

Good question,I'm going to be needing the same soon. I don't have a pattern for the shop to go of off. Gene, was your shop an old time place or one of the chains? I'd thought about ordering from a vendor but who knows what the pipes would look like by the time they got here.

Most of the muffler shops that have been in business for some time have the specifications to bend that 50 tail pipe for you mine was completed some ten years ago and still looks like new.
Good luck in you project

brjr51-It was an independent shop and not a real old one.The Midas and Car X shops also have the cards.I had taken my original pipe along to compare but it wouldn't have been necessary.

This posting was kinda late but I think it needs to be made. I ordered a complete exhaust system (1953)from a national vendor that only caters to 1949 thru 1954 Chevrolet passenger cars for $250 the tail pipe was in two pieces, the muffler was not marked which direction the flow goes, the flange plate was just a 3/16" flat plate with oblong bolt holes and the clamps were import jickey items that were not close to original, then I spent a day and a half rolling around on the garage floor trying to make it fit without rubbing the frame or other parts of the chassis, I had the muffler on all 4 possible ways and the exhaust pipe still either hit the steering tie rod or the tailpipe hit the frame. I took the mess to a muffler shop and they fixed it (rebent the exhaust pipe and welded it together, put on better clamps) for 50 more dollars, he told me he would have put on a custom set for $100, so I won't go the same route ever again!!! Just FYI.
