I am curious if anyone has tried soaking with ATF. I have no experience with a leather cone type clutch, but am familiar with clutch brakes used on big rigs and they use the ATF on the brake lining.

I've never heard of it being tried. The perils of experimenting with it are quite severe (ruining the leather) and I think I would prefer to stick with something that has been known to work for more than 100 years.
