Windup clock experts : How do I take the hour and minute hands of a wind up clock off and switch these hands to another wind up clock ? There are different manufacturers of clocks.....but are the shaft gears/connections that the hands attach to all the same ? Is it worth the trouble ? I figure they have to come off somehow.

Thank you all.

I'm waiting to hear the answer as well... The hands on mine don't seem to want to pass over each other!

It takes a special tool to remove the hands safely. You could set up a dual pry setup and may remove them without damage. Place a fulcrum on each side of the center shaft. Us two screwdrivers alike to pry at the same time so as to not bend the shaft the hands are on. If you are lucky You may be able to pry the hands off without damage.

If you have a local clock repair shop it might be best to have them do it rather than chance destroying the arms. I doubt it would be expensive if they charge you at all.

Thanks. Yes...I will certainly see if I can do it 1st. Believe me, if there is the tiniest bit of doubt, I will have a professional do it !! Thank you all.

I tried to take hands off but decided to quit...it looks like they are pressed on @ the clock manufacturer, the minute hand looked like it would crack. Wasn't worth it. Thanks all for the good advice.

My problem is I am too much of a perfectionist !! I will find another clock with better hands soon. Not worried.

Sounds like it is time to take the clock to your local clock shop and have them remove the hands for you.
