Hi,
i had water pump troubles on my 1930 SR and when we got it off it was completely shot. I have ordered one of the new sealed bearing ones and they said that I had to also have a baffle plate. I have seen comments on baffle plates, about getting them centred etc on the forum, but I have no idea just where they are fitted. Can someone tell me just where they go in relation to the water pump and any other key info.
Many thanks

The baffle plate goes right behind the water pump on the engine block. If you have the radiator out and look into the opening behind where the pump was you should see it. If you look and can see the number one cylinder outside casting your baffle plate is gone. That is what I found on my 1929. That is as far as I have gotten into fixing it. I do have the new pump and a new baffle plate on hand.

Hi Peterw,

Go to Bill Barker's excellent site for 1931 Chevs:

www.1931chevrolet.com

He has just updated it to explain the installation of the water pump including the baffle plate, which sits behind the pump in the engine block.

Also, review this thread from a couple of weeks ago:

If your baffle plate is still in place and in good condition....leave it alone!

Yep... and if you do decide to replace it... you PROBABLY need to remove your radiator first in order to get a straight shot at forcing the new one back into place.

Here'a a mirror view looking into the pump cavity with the baffle plate in place.

While on the topic I am going to ask a very naive question .... what is the purpose of the baffle plate and its opening? Was this opening a result of casting process for the block. Cannot remember exactly but I beleve there are other freeze plug locations elsewhere on the 31' block - is it a large freeze plug??. Just wondering.

Many thanks for all the excellent comments. I found Bill Barkers description very helpful. Hope I can now sort out the new pump.
