SUCCESS!!!

Used 4 screwdrivers as little wedges to slowly drive the transmission away from the engine and it worked. Just needed to be patient.

Congratulations, I think that was a good approach. Your bearing retainer does not look like what I've seen on a 36 standard. I've got 5 transmissions and they all have 4 screws holding the retainer, not 8. When you get around to it, post the casting number on your transmission.

Ron
While that may not be the recommended use for screwdrivers I know it works by experience. By what I can see in the pics the front shaft was rusted to the clutch disc centre. If you have sprayed penetrant on that part check it hasnt also dribbled onto the clutch disc facings as this will cause problems when driving.

I have a 38 3 speed with 4 screws in the front retainer and a 39 4 speed with 6 or maybe 8 screws, both out of 1/2 ton truck. I think 1 has a guide for the thrust bearing and the other doesnt but I dont remember which order.

Great job Ron.

You've proven again that a persistent and creative mechanic cannot be outsmarted by an inanimate object.
