The steering wheel on my 37 truck has a "key-way" which determines the spot where the steering wheel must go on the column.
Did Chevrolet ever make a steering wheel that looks similar to my 37 steering wheel, but was splined so it could go on the column more than one way? I understand that means the column shaft would have be splined. The 37 wheel is basically a black wheel with the "rubbercup" spring horn button, but I'd like to find a splined wheel, assuming the splines on most splined wheels would be the same.
Thanks!

I think that the 37 were the last to have keyway shaft and wheel, 38 had splined shaft and wheel and as far as I know they will not interchange without changing at least the steering worm and shaft.
I have both types but have not tried mixing them up, but would think the keyed wheel would not be secure on the splined shaft or keyed wheel on splined shaft.

The answer to your question is YES. 1938 and later Chevy cars and trucks had the splined shaft/wheel. Steering wheels on '38 and '39 trucks look pretty much exactly like your '37 wheel except for the splined center.
If you are contemplating a steering gear change, I think the '41-'46 gear/column is an easy swap and with the '38-'39 wheel you can retain the stock appearance inside.
Junkyardjeff was singing the praises of this modification in another thread.

That's exactly what I am planning on doing. Thanks, Mike!

Think I have seen steering wheels that had both the key and splines on ebay but not sure what year they came off of but looked like a 37 wheel,if you do a 41-6 steering box swap you will like it as it improves the road feel and a little quicker ratio for low speed turning. I ended up using a 41-6 wheel since it looks close and did not want to buy steering wheels that would not work.

Hi Joe,
The 41 - 46 box has a ratio of 26:1.
The 36 - 40 is 16:1.
It will be easier to turn but more turnd Lock to lock.
The 38 Wheel has splines and a key way.
The Ton & half shaft is longer than the half ton.
My knuckles hit the dash on my shorty Superior bus till I found a longer one.
Exception: If you have one of the 37 Chevys with a Flxible body, it uses a Ross steering box.
Good luck with your light commercial open express, Lou
