I had the points out of my 38 today and when I went to reinstall them, the black phenolic block disintegrated. I took the same functional part out of a spare and installed it. However, on the outside to tighten the points connection, it uses a round nut with a slot in it. I used a small screwdriver to tighten it but I guess there must be a special tool for this. What would that tool be and where would I find one?

The 1953-1962 6 cylinder distributors used that design nut. Perhaps one will show up on ebay.

I was wondering what kind of tool I should have to turn that nut. I used a small screwdriver to turn it but there must be a tool.

Those type nuts are not only used in your application and the slot is for screwdriver tightening, I think it is to reduce the risk of over tightening. That is the excuse I use. Tony

Tony, the problem is that the threaded shaft extends out past the nut so a regular screwdriver can't be used. I am sure there must be a forked type tool for it.

People have been making alterations to tools to deal with specific issues for a long time. Would cutting a notch into the tip of a screwdriver work? ![[Linked Image from projectvb.com]](http://www.projectvb.com/tech/dissect/ScrewdriverHead.JPG)

Looks like the same tool needed to remove the firewall gasket bolts. Harbor Freight sells a security bit kit and should have what you need.

That would be the tool. Here is a follow up on the part that broke. This part I think can be used in the six cylinders from at least 37 to probably 54 although the keyway has to be filed off for the older type. It is part number ABC500 square shoulder type, available from Steiner New Parts for Old tractors. Here is a link to the part listing. Delco Distributor Block
