With car idling and lights on there doesn't seem to be enough power to operate anything else. Signals don't work heater/defrost fans don't work. Possibly a bad ground?

I presume the battery and starting system worked to start the car and the battery to operate the lights. At idle the generator is not charging and the ammeter should be showing a large discharge with the lights on.Accelerate the engine and the ammeter should show a large charge. If this happens your electrical system is in order. You would need to fault find the defroster motor by checking if there is 6 volts on the terminals with a voltmeter.
