Rather than replace the entire drive train of my 1940 chevy town sedan, I'm curious as to whether there's a 4 or 5 speed manual transmission that would bolt up to my stock 216 ci motor and stock clutch setup?

I do not believe that you will find a 4 or 5 speed that will replace the stock 3 speed and also bolt to the closed driveshaft.

I think the closed driveshaft will be the next to impossible hurdle in your plan.

Patrick's in AZ www.patricksantiquecars.com has a kit to convert the Saginaw 4 speed to a closed driveline. The 40 bell housing would also need to be changed the later bolt pattern.
