I am painting my rebuilt 1954 Chevy 235 engine
which I am putting into my 1941 Chevy Coupe.
I understand that I should paint the engine gray, however, what about the accessories. Is there a
rule of thumb regarding painting the bell housing, air cleaner, crankcase exhaust tube, dip stick, alternator, starter, carburator, oil filter (add on), water pump, fuel pump, etc.? For example, is black used or is everything gray? I want it to look great! Thanks, Dan.

Dan, The bell housing and the water pump are painted gray. The transmission is not painted. The fan blade, air cleaner, starter, balancer, generator and the crank breather tube is black .If you use a Carter carbuertor the body (cast iron) is black.Seeing that you are using a 235 engine a Rochester carb. will be necessary and no paint is used. The parts that are painted black use a semi-gloss or medium gloss. The dip stick is not painted or is the fuel pump. The intake manifold is gray-exhaust not painted.Engine was painted after it was assembled so all gasket edges and bolts were painted. The black items as well as the unpainted were not on the engine when painted. If the oil filter is an AC brand (GM) it will have a bright blue body and orange cover if it was dealer installed or black if factory installed....same filter either way. Many other makes were available. chevy

Greg,The engine in your 1954 will be painted blue -same color blue used thru 1962.The balance of the components will be painted as in earlier post......Dan is putting his 1954 engine in a 1941 so he wanted to use the 1941 colors.Given that thought I told him to paint the oil filter orange and blue but this is proper only for 1950 and up.I am not sure as to what color the dealer installed AC oil filter was in 1941.It was yellow and black from 1947-49 but that was a different filter.
