Is the front bearing suppose to sit in a sleeve that supports it in the case, or does the bearing get supported by the front bearing retainer. My 1936 GMC transmission has a bearing housing that holds it tight in the transmission case hole and I bought the correct front bearing retainer to use in my 1936 Chevy pickup. The problem is that the clearances are way off on the 3rd gear syncro. If I remove the housing from the bearing, and assemble it with the bearing supported in the front bearing retainer, I get .025 clearance on the syncro spring, but the bearing is smaller than the hole in the transmission case. Is this correct? I don't see any kind of sleeve over the bearing in my parts diagram. Thanks...

The 1932-1936 Checrolet Master car and truck 3 speed front transmission bearing comes with the sleve or ring that fits around the bearing and adapts it to the case.
If you need one I may have a new one.
Learned this years ago when I rebuilt the trans. on my '34. The bearing and ring were spinning in the case and it required a new case and "complete" bearing with ring.

My new bearing has a groove in one side and came with a ring, like a circlip that goes in the groove. It looks like it's there to stop the bearing from going to far into the case. I don't believe it supports the bearing. I'm figuring that's the job of the front bearing retainer. Is this what your talking about Chev Nut?

No, the bearing did not use a retaining ring and was pressed into the ring which fit very tight into the case. The ring was (is) about at least 1/8" thick.

Chev Nut, I cant figure out how to add a picture of the bearing and the sleeve it was mounted in. Any way I can send it too you to get your opinion? The only problem with using the sleeve, it pulls the main gear forward and when assembled, I have an 1/8th inch gap between the shoulder and the syncro spring. The syncro flops around in there. Maybe the sleeve I have is for the GMC which uses a different front bearing retainer. If you have a sleeve I could purchase, that would be wonderful. Mike

By any chance do you have a Warner transmission? The WM will be cast into the side of the case. Also what is the casting number on the side of the case?
Some 1935 and 1936 models had a Warner trans. due to a strike at the Chevrolet plant.

Picture #13 is a good shot of the front shaft with bearing and cup and snap ring that prevents bearing from going too far back.

Picture #26 shows the bearing and the cup it sits in. Now I need to figure out why I have such a large gap(1/8th) at the synchro spring when I use the cup. Thanks for the pictures...

Have you removed that ring for the bearing that you just bought? The bearing you have, best way to say it, has an added feature since it has the ring. It will work with out that ring.
