First off, I'm new around here, so this is my first real post. I have learned a lot just by browsing around. Thanks to everyone who contributes here. I will be officially joining up as a member as soon as the budget allows. Thanks!

Early in my search for a proper steering wheel for my 39 GMC pickup, I picked up this wheel. I thought it was correct for 39/40 but I don't think so now. The casting looks identical, but the core is different. The hub is much deeper that the wheels I have picked up since then. It also has no splines, only a keyway. Can anyone positively ID this wheel? I'd like to sell it but I want to be sure I know what it's for.

As a side note, I looked for photo posting rules, and did not find any. If embedded photos are not cool I am happy to change to direct links.

Chevy changed from a tapered and keyed hub to a splined hub in 1938. That makes your wheel a '37 or earlier.

I didn't think of it when I posed earlier but I believe the Standard series cars for '33-'36 used a skinnier steering shaft. That would mean there are two sizes of tapered hubs in steering wheels.
These same models have a horn button cup which is unique to them. It might not be as deep as other models.

The Standard models used a smaller taper and the hub is level with the hard rubber on the bottom. The larger Master has a larger taper and the hub extends below the hard rubber. The one of interest is the later '31-'37.

Thanks very much. So if I understand this wheel would then be correct for 31-37 Master series cars. Is it not correct for trucks at all? I don't want to give anyone a false impression when I go to sell it. That's what happened to me!

Actually... I'm a bit confused. I just looked at a couple ebay auctions.
The Chevy master steering wheels I'm seeing don't have the same moulding as mine.

However, this auction, which is advertised as a 36-37 Chevy truck, looks pretty much the same.

What do you guys think?

Thanks. I'm listing it as a 36-37 Chevy Truck wheel, that may also fit the Master series cars. I have now had several people tell me it looks identical to what is in their 36 or 37 pickup. I also stated that it may fit trucks as far back as 31, but that I could not verify that for certain. I don't want to mislead anyone.

Thanks so much for the assistance with this!
