Just relined clutch with woven brake lining material. After a few miles it is slipping badly. I have rechecked alignment. This material is used on many cone clutches in other cars. Any thoughts on problem please?

I think that leather would be the best selection.

The brake lining material that you used - was it from a band? Or from a sheet big enough to cut out a piece that fitted to the shape of the cone ? If from a band I guess that the material became a little thinner at the outer (rear) end of the cone and a little thicker in the inner (front) end of the cone. If so, maybe the area that aligns to the flywheel (the inner/front part of the cone) is too small to give enough grip?
I guess you have checked the free play of the six expanders, and that none of the expanders are stuck to the cone in a position where it lifts the material.
If the problem is of one of these kinds, maybe it will decrease gradually as you use the car, and maybe totally disappear. Have you tried "Fullers Earth", wich is recommended in the manual if the clutch is slipping and you have cone leather? As it is a quite big job to remove the clutch I think I would give it a try.
If you have to remove the clutch I recommend leather. As I mentioned in an earlier post I am very happy with the leather that I had installed in 2007, driving approximately 4 700 miles (7 600 kilometres) since then.

Thanks for this. Material cut from big sheet. No binding adjusters and checked alignment. I have Fullers earth and will try some but I believe the material used is not suitable...leather would be best!!.

Whilst lining material works on some clutches, I have not had any luck with it on a Chevrolet cone clutch. The think the angle and width if the Chev clutch is the problem. Stick with leather, rough side out.
