hello

new to forum and was wondering two things

1 - does anyone have info on the rear axle removal procedure (lots of up/down play on the axle) and I assume its the rear wheel bearing and seal that is done
2- does anyone have a PDF of the master shop catalogue or parts list for this era of truck (its a AM with 4 speed tranny) im having problems getting proper part numbers for the various components I will require

thank you all in advance and look forward to the restoration

There are at least two resources available.

1). The Shop Manual. It is available via The Filling Station, Jim Carter's Truck Parts, Chevy's of the 40's and others or online via the Old Car Manuels Project, a website. Do a google search to find these.

2) The Master Parts Catalog. It has an extensive list of parts listed by description, part number and in some cases drawings. These are also available from some of the above listed.

My recommendation would be to spring for the bucks and buy hard copies because those items will be used silly.

Both resources are indispensable in working on the old projects and worth their weight in gold for learning and deciphering all or most of the mysteries related.

Good luck and welcome aboard!

thanks for the links and info.

ive removed the rear axles and like I suspected, the bearings are shot and there was play on drivers side (up/down movement) the axle has some scoring on it. has anyone put bearing savers on this and have any experience with them (3/4 diff and 14 inch breaks) and if you might have a part number or ref number.

thanks everyone for the help

I have just done my 38 1/2 ton rear end and the axle outer bearings were a 2 piece construction, outer race and rollers in 1 box and the inner race in a separate box. The inner race is a tight (press) fit onto the axle and the outer isnt so tight fit into the housing.
I am not sure if I still have the boxes though you probably use different numbers up there.

thanks for the info guys, but I pulled the axle and it seems the shafts are scored and I am having a heck of a time finding a bearing /axle saver bearing for this truck. any suggestions or does anyone know where I may be able to source 2 new rear axles for a 1941 chev 3/4 ton AM truck?

Try posting an ad in the "Parts Wanted" forum here.

Another option would be doing the same in the similar forum at Stovebolt.com.

Good luck!

I also found that the rear end from behind the 38 3 speed was a lighter construction than the 39 4 speed that I am using.

I have just checked a couple of axles in my shed , both have bearing savers on , one is SKF 1R 1502 , the other is Hyatt 1R 1502.

The axles are from 1946 and 1955 pickups.

I just found the boxes from the bearings I fitted, the outer and rollers are MBS C1502 and the separate inner is IR1502 but the box has MBS and RUHA so not sure which is the brand. 1502 seems to be the common factor for both my 4 speed and the later models by what Dusty has posted.
