What is the best alternative for the W-1? I want to keep an original look.

Why do you want to try a replacement for a W-1? A Rochester B-1, later model Carters and I understand a downdraft Zenith were marketed as replacements for the original W-1s.

Other than small amount of fuel leakage past the throttle shaft which is not too hard to clean occasionally, the Carter W-1 carburetors run well and get reasonable gas mileage. That includes most of the alleged "worthless" early models. I routinely run a later '32 on my test engine and have a friend that runs a '33 on his '32 Cabriolet and wont' change to a 569s as it runs too good. I have supplied rebuilt '32 W-1 carburetors to several people and rebuilt a few more for others. So far all are satisfied enough they have not contacted me for rebuilds or replacements.

JYD rebuilt my original 32 Carb and I works great and I use it for judged shows but run a later model for driving a lot. Chipper is right about the leaks through the throttle shaft but cleaning it up takes just a good wipe as you clean up the engine before a show etc. Since we drive ours so much, the later model idles a bit better but not to worry about it.

Well ours has been rebuilt several times. It does idle good now, but is using a lot of gas. Seems to be little adjustment available. Some minor backfire when running 40+, black smoke out of exhaust pipe when first started.

If the person rebuilding the carburetor does not have the specifications and coordinating adjustment gauge they can't do a first class rebuild. It is fairly common for alternate parts to be used on a rebuild. If they are not properly matched the carburetor will not run well. There are several W-1 castings that all look the same except to the experts.

Doyle Stokes has been rebuilding W-1 carburetors for an eon or two. I also work on them, though they are not my favorites. I prefer the updrafts. Last I knew Skipper wasn't doing W-1s any more. Maybe he has changed his mind? The Filling Station also has a rebuilding service for those carburetors.

Correct.....I no longer do the W1 carburetors. I now only restore the 1929-31 Chevrolet Carter updraft carburetors.

Chipper rebuilt my Carter W-1 for my '32 last winter. After approx. 200 miles, it performs great with good gas mileage (12-15 mpg). Of course, I have nothing to compare it to , being this is my first old Chevy, but I'm completely satisfied.
I believe it has a 569s metering rod and jet.

If it ain't brokeā€¦..fix it 'til it is.

That is correct it has the original '32 W-1 body and most internals. A 569S metering rod and jet were installed instead of the '32 rod and jet. Not sure if it makes much difference as it is not possible to run both options side by side.

With the original 32 W-1 carb I got about 10-12 MPG so I think the 569-S rod and jet are helping. I now have a 569-S carb on my 32 and get 15-19 MPG. I am not sure what rod and jet it has but think it is the correct one for the 569-S.

Chipper,

About how much do you charge to due a rebuild? How long would it take? And do you guarantee satisfaction? Do you use the 569S metering rod and jet on all your rebuilds?

I will send you a PM. I don't feel it is appropriate to discuss business on Chat.
