The 48 manual calls for .040 plug gap. My 48 has a 52 216 rebuilt in it and calls for .035 gap. It has J8C Champions in it. What gap should I use?

I agree. .040 seems to be a lot better. I've set mine at both.

For the 1937-1940 .040" was the recommended setting. If they were set closer you could get a surging at mid speeds. The little M-8 plugs used fro 1941-1948 were also set at .040" For 1949 and up .035" was recomended. Two reasons I would use the recomend .035"..... As the gaps widen from use you are closer to .035" and in a long run factory knows best for a reason.

The Champions are the plug that were in it when I bought it. They looked great with no carbon build up at all. #6 had a minute white carbon around the outside edge. Don't have any idea how many miles are on the plugs.

bobg, Your link takes you to the tune up specs beginning in 1949. In 1949, the spark plug gap is .035. Here is the link from the 42 - 47 shop manual where it states in the second sentence that the plug gap is .040: http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1942_47/4247csm1229.htm

The engine in my 48 is a 52. That is where my original question came from.
