Crank did not pass the finger nail test so it will need to be turned, still thinking about installing a new set of bearings so I can drive it locally this summer while prepping the extra 235 to go in. Since its will be a big pain to install I want to make sure its good enough to drop in,it was a running motor but mileage unknown so its going to came apart and all the bearings checked and resealed if its not worn out. If its tired it will be a crank donor for the rattler.

Hit it with a little fine crocus cloth and all will be fine. As long as the tolerance is close and nothing sticks up so high that it hits the bearing surface the oil film will fill in the small valleys. Destitute college kids proved that many times in the past.

I wish I had some good news on the test drive but the rattle is still there so I am getting the 60 235 ready to drop in.

Sounds like a piston or wrist pin issue

It made a 30 mile round trip to a cruise in today in 90 degree heat,as long as I kept a load on the motor I did not hear much noise so it was 5th gear at 40 and did not rev it up too much while shifting. About half way there I was wondering if it was a mistake to take it that far but I made it back home and not going any longer then 5 miles away until the other 235 is in.

I drove it on a 100 mile round trip today and it did not blow up,it was noisy when I got to where I was going and did cool down a little for the return trip which was good since I had to hurry home to beat a storm coming. New motor is almost ready to go in.

In the future, check your region listing in the G&D. I see Ohio is fortunate that you have several clubs, and therefore a good number of folks you can contact for a second ear next time you need it. Glad you resolved your motor issue.

Dropping the pan and pulling all rod bearings out told me it needs attention,I was afraid to look at the mains after what I seen with the rod journals so unfortunately its time for another motor. Something went wrong in the rebuild since it only has around 10,000 miles on it so when it comes out I am going to get another crank and use the motor for a future project,I had too much work done on it to just scrap it so if it can be saved I will find something to put it in. I am going to run it until I can put the other motor in which I hope to do before it gets too cold.

Jeff,
If you baby it, you should be able to get a few more miles out of that mill. If you're not doing it, run it with some Lucas Oil Treatment. I note the Chevy manuals actually call for Lucas. Also monitor your oil pressure. I put in an aftermarket oil pressure gage so I could keep one eye on the road and one on the gage after my engine rebuild. LOL

Some of your fellow Ohio Region members can probably help you out. We have a really good engine shop here in Williston, VT called Vermont Engine Service. I highly recommend them as they know old Chevy motors intimately.

Good luck.

The new motor is almost ready to drop in,I am just trying to get 4 layers of paint off of it. I thought I could just scuff and paint but when i use the air gun to blow it off it will take some paint off down to the bare metal so most of it will have to come off, some came right off and I had to do some scraping to get more off so I got so paint remover that I am going to try to get the rest off. It had the original blue then it got painted gray then yellow and blue again.
