Does anyone know how 2 engine splash guards (one on each side of engine, adjacent to the frame, down low) attach to the 1940 Chevy Master Deluxe, 216ci? The body shop guys took them off without taking any pictures. I know I should've taken photos of them in place, but didn't. Service manual is of no help. If anyone happens to have photos they would like to share, that would certainly do the trick. Or, if it exists, a factory assembly manual would be even better! I would buy one in a second. thanks, Curt

Hello Curt,
I'm not sure if the frames are the same between '37 and '40. But mine bolt along the frame flange and at each end is a bracket that secures the front middle and the rear middle of the splash pans.

My '38 is similar to Dave's '37. They don't attach to the engine.

Thanks for your information. I'll go outside and sit (where the engine used to be!) and try to figure this out. Sure wish I had taken pictures!! Curt

These 2 splash guards attached to the right and left inside frame. Not the engine. I noticed there is a half circle cut out on each end. I imagine that end probably was toward the front and the cut out half circle area was for tire rod clearance. Still scratching my head about this! Curt

Thanks Dave! Thank goodness for your photo bucket! I think I'll be able to figure this one out now.
Excellent photos. What year and model are these from?

Hello Curt,
These are from my 1937 Master DeLuxe 4 dr Sedan. I had 2 of them. One of them turned into a parts car (the "white car" ). Which I sold last year. The second car is the "black car", which I currently drive. Although this past year has been reserved to fixing things I didn't before driving it extensively during 2012.
I have posted quite a bit about repairs in the recent past.
Good luck with your project.

The guards for the '40 are way different than the ones shown. They bolt to the frame and go down rather than across. The front is the end with the curve for the tie rods to pass under. The tabs that stick out on the back bolt to the frame members that go at an angle from the side rail to the cross member where the transmission mounts. The rear hole on the passenger side mounts to the rear battery box bolt, and the rest are pretty much common sense to figure out. The driver's side starting from the rear follow the same pattern.
I'd do pictures, but my old computer no longer corresponds with PhotoBucket, and I can't figure out another way to add them.

Hello Richard, I appreciate your response about the splash guards. I will be studying the installation this weekend and will certainly re-read your description of how they both attach. My engine rebuild should be completed within the next couple of weeks and ready for installation soon. I'm just trying to plan ahead with these splash guards. Thanks again,
Curt

Because of how they mount, you can attach the splash guards before installing the engine. For sure install them before installing the front clip. Good luck with it!

Hi, I'm a total newbie here, but I have sort of the same dilemma. I bought a 1940 Master Deluxe and the splash guards are missing.
Do you by any chance have pictures of your splash guards before installation? I don't even know what they look like.
I know a guy who said the pair he has are for a 40 Master Deluxe but they don't look like they should fit.
I need all the help I can get.
Thanks,
Kirk

The engine side splash pans fit 1940-1948 models except convertibles and 1940 Master 85 models. This should broaden your search.

If you are not worried about being all original I would split the drivers side so the exhaust will not have to be reomved to remove the splash pan,my 37 has fenton headers so I split mine to fit and makes it much easier when time to service. I had to remove then to drop the oil pan and did not have to mess with the exhaust.

They were eleminated completely in 1949 for better air movement in the engine compartment.

Didn't realize how old this thread was until just now... Curt; did you get yours put on? I'm hoping to get an engine, transmission and radiator this summer to get mine back together. Gotta sell my Subaru first, though so I can afford it.

Kirk Did you get a picture of the guards? They are a bit strange looking and difficult to look at and figure out how to put them on, so you probably have the right ones.

I think it improved the air movement on my 37 after I installed them, when it was above 50 outside I had to open the cowl vent or excessive heat would come from the firewall but now I do not have to have the cowl vent open until it really gets hot.

I'm working on a 40 Special Deluxe Coupe & I find myself in this same situation for my car did not come with these pans. Chevgene states that they fit a 40-48 except for convertibles & Master 85. I have found 2 different sets on E-bay that claim they are for a 40 & they do not know the model. 1 is 1-piece for each side & the other is 2-piece for each side & they both are configured different. Can anybody clear this up for me please.
Thank You
Sparky

The parts book shows part # 3653447 and 448 for 1940-1948 cars except convertibles. Perhaps some one with a 1947 or 1948 can comfirm. I recall seeing where Chevrolet eleminated the splash shields but can't find where it was. Among other thigs they said it was for better air flow. Thought it was 1949.

Hi Sparky, I have 5 sets for you to choose from. All came from 41-48 Chevys, so they should fit your 40. Send me a PM if you are interested and I will come up with a price. All are media blasted. Each side are different. The last two pictures show the one for the passenger side. Good luck, Mike ![[Linked Image from i1321.photobucket.com]](http://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u560/41chevymike/IMG_3130_zpsmlphugya.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i1321.photobucket.com]](http://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u560/41chevymike/IMG_3137_zpsyknrduyx.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i1321.photobucket.com]](http://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u560/41chevymike/IMG_3136_zpscqbv0jnk.jpg)

Mike's splash panels are the real thing. They are identical to the ones on my '40. I just don't have pictures.

Hello Richard. I'm sorry I'm a month late responding to your question. Yes I did get the splash guards on. What I did was to sit in the engine compartment (engine not installed yet) and just study the layout of everything. I got the 2 splash guards and monkeyed around with them until, bingo, it all made sense. The holes all lined up (I had to straighten the guards here and there) and after a couple of trial fits, I finally screwed them in. I had my original splash guards so I was lucky in that regard.
When you have those two guards off the vehicle, it is very difficult at best to even know what they are and where in the heck they go! I took photos of most of what I take off, but didn't have any of these guards.
If you need some good photos, I can try to take some photos of mine and send them to you. The engine is installed, but the fenders have not been installed yet.
My splash guards look just like the photos that Mike Buller posted.
:-) Curt Kennedy
