Hi bow tie bob, 1953 was the first year that Chevrolet offered power steering. To add this accessory to your car you will need the special steering column with the slave unit, the power steering pump with the special brackets, the special two groove pulley, the two power steering hoses and the hardest item to locate the special horn button that is white and says power steering in it. Edited: Forgot to mention that if you do have PG transmission then you need the special NSBU light switch and the special linkage to attach. If you are having starter problems the guess is that you have a power glide transmission. The solution to your starting problem is the special 4 field starter. These starters are still around, however they are expensive. As in every case the conversion to 12 volts is NOT recommended. Rather, find the problem and fix it. Edited: You will be looking for Delco-Remy Starter # 1108035. This will be difficult as most rebuilders back in the good ole days chopped off the data plates in order to reduce inventory.

Bob, a member of chevy talk sent me a photo showing all the parts needed since I was in the process of obtaining a unit. I found that it really helped when I looked to see if all the parts where there. I sent a copy of the photo to your enail address. If you have any questions drop me a line the unit has not been installed but I will do my best to help you out. Greg

I worked in a local salvage yard, ok a junkyard, part time while I was in high school, to pay my parts bill and I remember a couple of guys that had 54 power steering Chevrolets buying the stuff to change their cars to manual steering after the Chevrolet dealer gave up fixing the durned power steering for the umpteenth time, also a couple of us did a pretty brisk business changeing PG cars over to three on the tree, a pretty big project for a couple of highschoolers. Just a word to the wise, IMHO.
P.S. I have one of the 2 groove (narrow belt) engine pulleys & harmonic balancers I took off of a 53 powerglide engine.

Hard starting is not necessarily a problem with 6V other than as previously mentioned 12V cables are in place,I went to the local battery shop an dfor $17.00 had an 01 guage positive cable built, cleaned all the terminals bright and shiny an dkeep them that way. Also bu a reproduction woven ground strap and replace the insulated one. Clean the block where the groung hooks up and you will find that every thing works much better.
