Hello Guys, The 52 is coming off the road now that winter is closing in on this end of the world. Amongst other things I'm going to overhaul the diff. I'm replacing diff and wheel bearings, oakie bush, seals etc. The diff is quiet but makes a clunk when moving from drive to reverse, I assume it has excessive backlash. My Question is did they make any noise when they new, or is it something I may have to live with? Any advice would be appreciated, as we didn't have the auto available here until about 56. Many Thanks, Ian.

They were a little harsh when changing directions when new, especially is the idle speed was a little too high. You can check the crown gear to pinion gear adjustment first. Was common to get worse with use and its nothing to worry about. They all do it.

You may also want to check for any engine vacuum leaks, which will create an erratic / higher than normal idle speed.

Thanks for that Chevgene, I thought that might be the case, Ian.

Thanks, the idle speed is not too high, my old girl runs sweet as a nut, except for the noisey lifter. Ian.
