If it's a US car it will be on the floor near the passenger side seat nailed to the floor. Mostly in front of the seat but could be on the side as pictured in Bill Barker's www.1931chevrolet.com. Open cars it will be on the seat frame. Canadian cars will be on the firewall on the engine side...Joe

Not trying to be a PITA here but can someone post a picture so I can get mine in the close to correct place. The main sill appears original in my car but I really can't find the nail holes or at least four holes that would line up with the tag holes. The area everyone describes looks like it would be really close to the door sill plate to the point where it doesn't seem I'd have enough room between the seat slider frame and sill plate. Maybe it goes more to the front of the seat rather than the side?

Does this help? http://1931chevrolet.com/specs6.htmThere's a photo of it at this location -- but it's for a Landau. They tended to be near the middle of the (bucket) seat. On the Coach, I believe that it was at the front corner of the seat. Like Skipper said, in line with the sill plate, readable from the outside.

Thanks Bill. On my 4dr, there doesn't seem to be enough width in wood in that area between the sill plate and seat slider bracket. I will try and get some pictures but my car is at the body shop right now. I was sent a picture from another member that shows the plate about half way between the front of the seat and the front door hinge jam on the main sill.

Canadian cowl tags are the vin #for the cars. I can only speak to 32s but the same probably hold true for 31. The cowl tag number is the vin number on the ownership.

On my 4dr, there doesn't seem to be enough width in wood in that area between the sill plate and seat slider bracket. As explained above, the car serial number plate is attached to the passenger side wood main sill, facing the passenger side front door. There is plenty of room for the car serial number plate in this location. Also, the car serial number plate was attached with four small nails.
