I have a 37 chev master w/a 216 original engine. Does anybody know if those engines were stamped with serial numbers, and if so, where are the numbers located? The Michigan vehicle cert shows a VIN #116031, but I can't find this number anywhere on the vehicle

Right in front of the fuel pump. I had to use a piece of paper and pencil lead to get a rub imprint, I could not otherwise get a decent glimpse of it.

OK so '38 was the first year for it to be by the distributor. Did it then stay that way through the end of the family of engines?

Good, your '37 still has it's original heart beating in it's chest.

A silly question, if you follow the rules with the early cars using the engine number as the only/main identifier what must/should happen when the engine only is changed?? Down here there should be a number stamped into the chassis that is the main identifier but the engine number is also included in the registration paperwork, no chassis number there is a lot of hassle to get 1 and register the car. A silly question, if you follow the rules with the early cars using the engine number as the only/main identifier what must/should happen when the engine only is changed?? Not silly at all. Therein lies the reason, I believe, why all states stopped using the engine number on the title after '55. The question isn't asked here a lot but over on the Stovebolt site there are questions asked all the time about how to register vehicles that have the engine number on the title but that engine is no longer in the truck.

As I see the situation in a hypothetical scenario I change the engine in my truck but dont notify the authorities my friend rebuilds my old engine and puts it in his truck and notifies the authorities. Now there is 2 trucks with the same identifier possibley leading to a situation I read about some months ago about a couple arrested for a stolen car. Tony
