Got the ride running but the gas gauge doesn't seem to work? Sending unit?
Short? Gauge?
Thoughts?

Not working ?

Meaning the gauge stays on empty? Or gauge goes past full?

Tell what is happening, then can tell you what to look for.

Gauge just bounces on empty after I put 7 gallons in.

Tank is brand new and my mechanic installed it, does it ground on the frame? As the frame is highly painted and I have new rubbers on the straps. Gas line is steel?

Not sure if it worked before it's been 16 years since I drove it.

Haven't checked wires yet, and leave on a trip today for a week so it will have to wait.

Yes. Try running a ground wire from the sending unit to a good ground on the frame.

Staying on empty indicates the line going from the dash unit, to the tank unit is "grounded" somewhere, as in pinched against metal. Run a new temporary wire, from dash unit to tank unit. See if you have a change.

Follow JYD advise on installing a new ground wire, with eyelets on either end, going from one of the screws on the sending unit to a clean, unpainted spot on the frame.

Ok drained the tank and pulled the sending unit out and hooked a clamp wire to the flat disk like top that sits flush with the gas tank and then to a ground. Worked lik a champ.
So I took a grinder and knocked off some paint on the underside of the body in statigic areas where the tank would touch.

Hooked it all back up and put 2-3 gallons in and nothing? Had the wife watch the gauge and touched the top exposed portion of the sending unit including the attachment screws and ran the ground directly to the battery and still nothing!

Maybe the ground portion is on the underside of the sending unit mounting bracket as the clamp touched both sides when I tried it out of the car?

But then there is the rubber gasket which would counter that.

Maybe I need more gas?

Did you check to see if the float is OK? Just a thought...

I've read all the suggestions and maybe I need to drain and pull the sending unit again but this time check to see if the float floats?

Had planned to drain and drop the tank today and check for float damage. Decided to take dads 51 for a dusk cruse down our gravel road with goggles (and no insurance, license or registration, windshield, doors, etc.) in honor of Father's Day.

Anyway after a bump or two or ten, the gas gauge started working! pineapple
