Judging by the it's condition I have what I believe to be an original umbrella holder. What style old umbrella should I be looking for to go in it? I assume it would be black but what style handle? I don't want to have to sell my 47 in order to get an original 47 umbrella. One from that period and similar style would do.
Maybe this question will start a thread like the jack question did!

Is your holder a 1947 and prior holder ? Or a 48 holder ?

The early umbrella holders like 1940 have the 2 mounting tabs on one side of the umbrella holder. In other words, when it is installed and you look at one length/side of the umbrella holder you would see 2 tabs each with one small hole in the tabs for mounting the holder. The other side would have no mounting tabs. I have an NOS 1948 umbrella holder and it has 2 mounting tabs with 1 mounting tab on each side when mounted.
FYI. I believe that someone is making a reproduction umbrella holder that is not too bad, so if you are going to pay the high dollars for an original, make sure it is an original accessory.

dtm: Thanks for replying. Hope you had a safe trip home from the swap meet.
Mine was already in the car when I got it 8 years ago. I took it out as the modern umbrella that was in it really stuck up in the passengers way and rubbed the edge of the glove box door when the car door was closed.
I looked at it today and it has 2 mounting tabs, one on each side. I guess that means it would not be correct for my 47 ????
Is there a way to tell the diff between repos and an actual 48 holder.

Yes, yours is correct for 1947/1948. I have not seen a reproduction umbrella holder in person, only on the internet/ebay.

Being correct for my 47 is good to know. Thanks.
Now, back to my orig question. Assuming the holder came with an umbrella, what did it look like? Wooden straight handle, wooden curved handle, ivory or plastic, etc.

Looking at the accessories price list, it does not list a umbrella, just a umbrella carrier @ $2.25. umbralla carrier From Johnny's site. So maybe the customer provided the umbrella. ???

My 1941 book says it comes with the umbrilla and describes it as as being made of quality materials throughout, with tempered steel ribs and coverd with durable oiled silk. The white pin dots and neat celluloid tip add to its smart appearance. The knob or handle appears to be about 1 1/2" long and an inch in diamenter and is a light color, possibly white and is groved. Cost $2.95 in 1941

Gene: Thanks for the info. That helps.
Do you think the handle was a light colored wood ? I doubt it would have been a plastic type material but ?????.
If supplied with a car today it would have Bow Ties all over it and ads.

What I posted above came from the 1948 accessories price book. Looking at the 1947 accessories price book, I do not see a listing for the umbrella holder at all. However, it is listed on the accessory parts list as umbrella holder.

I saw an original umbrella new in the box years ago, and as I remember, the handle was a light colored Bakelite. For more information contact Ron Wade of Chevs Of The 40's because he is the fellow that has the new old stock umbrella.

Dick get on the search,I have never seen one in all my years looking for accessories...The reason I said think twice is,There are a few accessories that I installed, although cool looking,I found I never used them and in some cases just got in the way. What ever the case ...We sure would love to see your original toys!I tryed to start a thead on directional signals but no one wanted to come aboard...Still looking for what everyone is useing...The correct 47-48 switch is extremly hard to find as is the bumper jack and the umbrella

from my understanding the pre war umbrella carriers came with umbrellas and the post war carriers did not come with umbrellas, only the carriers. since I do not specialize in pre war I am just going off what friends told me that are pre war guys.

as for the umbrella, I searched ebay for low profile vintage style umbrellas, green to match my car. I was shooting for an umbrella that was era correct.

The 1948 parts book calls it aa "umbrellia carrier "UNIT" for $2.25.
If it was $2.95 in 1941 the lower price in 1948 indicates it probably did not come with an umbrellia.

Johnny: Thanks for the pic. Most helpful. I can see that I need to get a short umbrella if I am going to use the holder. The two that I tried B/4 were too long.

You called it correctly. I believe 20" would be ideal with 22" being the max. The point does extent thru the bottom opening about 1" depending on the thickness of the umbrella. The two I tried were 24" & 26" which stuck up too far to suit me. I'll most likely will find something on e-bay or at the next flea mkt/swap meet I attend.
