Finally got tired of the smoke, so I have started to replace the rings. Head off, and I notice the pistons have some movement within the block. The cylinders are good, but I do not know if at some point the block was bored but old / small pistons used. Pending a complete disassembly, should there be some (noticeable) piston movement in the block?

should there be some (noticeable) piston movement in the block? If you can notice the movement with a 0.002" gap between piston and cylinder wall then maybe. If greater than that it will be over the original specification. That is assuming the pistons are cast iron. If aluminum then the piston to cylinder gap will be a bit more. Just a guess but suspect that a new set of pistons and cylinder rebore is in your future.

Pistons are out, and new parts are ordered. So my next question: what is the recommended ring(s) end gap?
