Hi all,

I have a number of 35mm slides taken by my father that I'd like to digitize or scan. Do you have any experience doing this or opinions about this process that you can share?

Also, I have a 1928 Chevrolet film slide of truck information. Any ideas about digitizing this film or individual frames?

Thanks, Dean

Hi Dean,

I have scanned many 35 mm color slides. I used an HP Photosmart 3210 All-in-one printer. I bought that particular model because it had the capability to scan color slides. I has a plastic slide holder that will hold 4 slides at one time and also has a special light in the cover that shines through the slides as they are being scanned. My success (or lack of success) scanning slides depends a lot on the quality and exposure of the slide itself. The software that comes with the printer allows for many editing options including resizing the image, exposure and color correction, cropping and others as well. The downside.....the process is extremely time consuming, especially if you start editing, but in my case is very rewarding. Lotsa memories there. It's a great project for a Vermont winter. I'm not sure HP still makes a printer/scanner that can handle slides. Mine is quite old by today's standards.
I can probably send you a few examples (good and not so good) via email if you like.

Hope this helps.

What about the idea of scanning lots of Jam Handy Films. For example, in 1940, Jam Handy produced somewhere around 70 filmstrips. 95% were Black & White with just a few color filmstrips. I would love to scan all of my filmstrips asap. The fimstrips are not going to last another 25 years. They need to be put into a digital format.

Suggestions?

I vaguely recall being able to take 8mm(?) film (old home movies) to a photo service and having it transferred to VHS tape so you could watch it on a TV set. There must be a similar service to digitize filmstrips and such. I just don't know where!!! Maybe a real photo/camera shop?

Just had a thought.....check with your local library to see if they know of such a service.

Lots of places will transfer your 8mm to DVD -- including Costco!!

I did 30+ fifty-foot reels and was very happy with the final product.

Speaking of digitizing Jim Handy films, check out this article. Notice that there is a link to a Jim Handy film archive.
