I'm in the process of putting together my first 216 and got a couple of questions about the shims before I button it up. On the front and #2 & #3 intermediate mains 1 shim per bearing gives me a clearance of .0015-.002.The rear cap has 2 shims to get the clearance. Is 1 shim per cap OK? I've got them all on the cam side of the cap. Also the factory shims on the rear main that I took out when I tore down the engine had a notch at the rear seal area. The new Federal Mogul shims do not have this notch so the upper and lower ropes would not actually contact each other but instead would ride on the shim. This appears to be an excellent source of a potential oil leak to me since the thickness of the shim on each side of the rear main cap would have no seal surface. Should the new shims be notched?

Any number of shims is OK.The most important thing is the bearing clearance. When done and all main bearing bolts torqued the crank shaft should turn freely.Yes,do cut out the notches for the rear main seal.Try to stay in the .001" to ..0015" range if bearings are new.If no shims are left and clearance is correct that also will be OK>
