Hi. Can anyone tell me if a parts book was produced or reproduced for a 1934 standard Chevrolet as I have never seen one in New Zealand.

I got a 1929---1934 Chevrolet parts book reproduction years ago........70's from Jim Sandoro at buffalo motor cars, not sure if he still offers it.???

I purchased a 1940 Chevrolet parts book a year ago and it has way more stuff in it. Its a better book in my opinion for looking stuff up. I have also seen a 1929---1935 Chevrolet parts book on ebay USA around $50, not sure if its still for sale. Think it was original and would be the better choice.

Most Chevy books are divided into
1. Car Model Serial Identification and General Car Data
2. Abbreviations and alphabetical index
3.Chassis Section Groups 0.000--9.999
4.Passenger body groups 10.000--15.999
5.Commercial body groups 16.000--17.999

To locate the listing of a Part, refer to the Book under the Group Number Id-ing it. Look at alphabetical index.(part name)
Look at illustrations for the number (what it looks like)
Look at the Numerical index if the part number is known.(see on the side of the removed part itself, all are stamped)

Main units are id--ed by the number preceding the Decimal like

Engine........0
Cooling and oiling......1
Electrical..............2
Fuel System.............3

After the "." individual parts have a number. Like under Group Number 3.023 is part number 475570....gas tank bolt and its price column is shown (3.707) which refers to the prime group of that part.

Hope this helps you.

In a parts book you really want one that is produced a year or so after the year 1934 ? your looking for. That way all the relative parts for the car are listed.

Actually a parts book in the year or maybe next year are best to determine what originally was used. Trim parts are the first to be removed. Substitutes for other parts are listed making people assume incorrectly that identical parts were used for several years. A book 5-10 years later will help with parts that fit several model years. The first book I refer to is a '45 edition of a '29-'42 parts book. That one is the most complete and better illustrated. Seems that many parts that had been removed from the parts books were again available late in WWII period.

iagree

Open cars are harder than others starting in 32 since they were on the way out starting that year. You will see a lot of parts which never made it into the parts books....or should I saw you wont see them in the parts books!

A good example would be the 34-35 running board moldings. If you look in a 1937 parts book they were replace with the 37-38 moldings if I remember right. Not the same at all.

Also if you look in a 39 parts book for a 37-38 master running board, you will see that they had dropped the master running board and there was a note to use the master deluxe and just paint the stainless molding body color.

So again, you need a parts book form the year that your car was made, and maybe the next year or 2. Then maybe one 10 to 20 years out.

Now you also need to be careful with like the 32 parts books, there is a Feb and a Aug parts book. The Aug will have all the 32 body parts listed where the Fed just has 31 and back body parts.

One of the best body parts books is the one made in 35, you can get a CD version of it from the Filling Station.

Hope this helps.

actually THE 1929-1935 CHEVROLET OPEN CARS HAD THEIR OWN SPECIFIC PARTS BOOK ABOUT 20 PAGES.

I GOT A COPY OF ALL THE PAGES OF AN ORIGINAL FROM ERIC PETERSON IN KNOXVILLE TENN OR KY.

Thats how I was able to find out that the 35 standard roadsters had leather door check straps.

Thanks for all the reply's its great to obtain all this information, mike you are a mindful of information on Chevrolet.
I have am planning on going to Faxon Auto lit while in Los Angeles I will check out their car books etc. however Kiwiguy from NZ has offered to loan me his copy to study. it's A very kind offer Brett.
Gassedaussie I am interested to find out the position of the Clutch return spring arrangement I somehow think a RHD arrangement on a NZ standard coupe is quite different to what is shown in manuals It could be the same set up as Canadian models as NZ Chevy were Imported form Canada

To answer your question on the clutch return spring location. So there is a special clip the bolts to the bell housing. It is universal and can be on the right side or left. I can send you a picture if you would like.

Paul----------consulting my 1934 Chevrolet Canada production sheets for 1934...STANDARD SERIES dc.!

The **early** production GM Chevrolet MODEL # 200......fisher body job 34-601 5 passenger regular coach. No RIGHT HAND DRIVE cars were exported from Canada to anywhere in the world.

GM CHEVROLET MODEL # 205 , fisher body job # 34--601 , 5 passenger special coach No right hand drive cars were exported anywhere in the world .

GM Chevrolet MODEL # 246 , 4 passenger regular roadster = RS ( rumble seat ) NOT a fisher built body, 16 cars were built and exported around the world

GM Chevrolet MODEL # 250 , 5 passenger regular Phaeton , 155 right hand drive cars were exported around the world

GM Chevrolet Model # 260, Fisher job # 34-607, 2 passenger regular 3 window coupe. No cars right hand drive were exported.

GM Chevrolet Model # 254 , C K D, = COMPLETE KNOCK DOWN, components shipped to another factory to be assembled, NO right hand drive were produced.

All of the above info applies to GM Chevrolet MODEL SERIES 200, which is listed as EARLY SERIES BODY. Sometime nearer the end of the year"" the main body""" was lengthened 2 inches. For instance the early 200 series coaches have a removable gas tank cover panel, whereas the later 1934 production , the rear body panel including window area, was all one piece design on the coaches and sedans. The coupes , roadsters, phaetons continued to use the removable gas tank cover panel .

For LATE 1934-B production its called 1200 series. Under a factory notation on my copy of the production sheets its says
" 1934-B CHEVROLET have new style bodies which are approximately 2" ( inches ) longer. Chassis and other specification details are similar too 1934 model.

FIRST SERIAL NUMBER 650001 BUILT OCT 31 / 1934
LAST SERIAL NUMBER 650776 BUILT DECEMBER 7/ 1934

First motor number M-90884
Last Motor number m-91655

For 1935 the STANDARD SERIES IS MODEL SERIES EC. . THE GM CHEVROLET MODEL NUMBERS begin with 12- . And the fisher body job numbers that appear on the aluminum firewall plate begin with 35-12 coupe is 35-1207, coach is 35-1201, regular sedan is 35-1209, " special" sedan is also 35-1209, sedan delivery is 35-1271
Again roadsters and phaetons were not fisher body produced so no fisher designation number.

A total of 448 right hand drive cars were exported for 1935.
A total of 5736 CKD = complete knock down chassis are noted as AUSTRALIAN, exported , no note as to whether left of right hand drive

Have you looked at AbeBooks.com to see if they can come up with what you are looking for? I bought a very nice original book from them some years ago. They also can direct you to other sources or book shops.

Actually CHIPPER says it best, go for the year after the year of manufacture your looking for. 5-6 years later 1940 for 1934 is actually a lot of info disappears out of the books. Need 1934, buy the 1935 book.

Thanks for the photo. Your set up is quite different to mine. I don't have a linkage with the chain. I cant work out why my model is different but am quite sure it is the original set up as I am the second owner and had the Coupe for the last 47 years I must see if I can work out how to place photos on this site. Thanks for your help I are not making any comments on the colour scheme, at lest yours car is going, mine has been of the road for too long. I leave for California next week for four weeks. It would be great if I could view an original 34 coupe the same as mine while tripping around on holiday If there are any member's out there willing I would appreciate the opportunity.
Cheers Paul.

Paul, these days I now live in a small town halfway between Brisbane and Sydney, however if I knew you were coming to Queensland I would be happy to send the book up to a friend so that you could have a look at it. Does your wifes family live in Brisbane?
