The two big reservoirs in the head that contain the push rods are to be filled to 1/2 capacity with engine oil. This level must be maintained. The 28 has a single valve cover, which must be used along with the two gaskets, to keep as much dust and dirt out of these two oil reservoirs as possible.

What about the big oil filled felt pad that sits on top of the rockers and the little round felts that sit on the ends of the arms as they contact the springs? Actually my 28 came with a "mod". I had a tank on the cowl with a line running down to the rocker cover. Every now and then you were supposed to open the tap and let oil run down and top up the felt.

Not sure if I'm doing this rite or not but wanted to ask a question while on this subject. I thought I had an oil leak at distributer on 28 AB, but after a good cleaning and closer inspection the oil is coming out of valve cover sparkplug wire encloser and following wires to dist. cap. All wires are oil soaked. I have 2 gaskets on cover but that area at wires seems to be wide open. Am I missing some type of gasket that helps seal that area a little bit better? It's not pouring out but enough to make a oily mess. The 2 valve spring pockets are about 1/2 full of oil. Doc

Howdy folks....I have a 1928 1 ton with a 4 cyl. in it. It has four holes on the top which need to be lubricated occasionally, occasionally is the operating word, I take my Chevy for coffee in the morning so it gets oiled about once a month. Once or twice through the summer I'll take the cover off and oil the Felts on the push rods. Mine doesn't have any gaskets under the valve cover. If I get too carried away with the oiling, when the engine warms up the extra oil makes everything damp and it looks like an oil leak whereas in fact I just got carried away with myself. The felt under the valve cover does a pretty good job, it just needs to be damp. Thats how I work mine anyway....Terry

I've been wondering what the two oil troughs are there for.
I thought they where to catch excess oil, but if they have to be kept half full there must be another function, is that to lube the valve stems?

Howdy Bernard...the two troughs are for the valve stems. The valve stems don't need much lubrication but they do need some otherwise they'll get sticky and then start bending things up . If you overfilled the troughs, when the engine warms up the oil will migrate and it will look like you have oil leak and you're lubricating the whole engine..LOL.......Terry

Thanks Terry, since I've owned my Chevy I've only run the engine in the shed as re-wiring and brake rebuilding has got in the way of a road run :(
I've been impressed by the lack of smoke or oil in the exhaust gas.
Think I'll half fill those troughs, start up and stand back!

Howdy Bernard........ Even if you can't move the national the engine is always fun to listen to...... I've got to rewire my Chevy as well, just waiting for the wire to get here. Might be a next winter job. I just got some kingpins in today , so I'll have to do that to. These guys are sure fun to work on....... Terry
