Hello to all. 1929 Chevrolet passenger car. I would really appreciate some advice on installing the speedo driven gear and its shaft, into the rear section of the gearbox. The shaft fits through a threaded plug on the cable side and into another threaded plug on the other side. It comes with three steel spacers, one long, one shorter and the third shorter still. I got this stuff in a plastic bag so I don't know the correct combinations. The gearbox is closed and on the car so I can't see into it.

The simplest option but I guess the wrong one is to just fit the shaft hoping the plug on one side and the cable pushing against it on the other side will all hold the driven gear in the right spot. But these spacers are there for a reason I guess, so if someone can tell me which to use and on what side of the driven gear I am eternally grateful.

Thanks, Dave

Hello Anagriff,
Take a look at the 1929-32 Chevrolet Master Parts Price List on 'old online chevy manuals', at the bottom of page 22. There is a picture of one spacer only and possibly in the relation to where it is installed. Maybe that will help. It looks like the shaft is stopped by the plug on the one side, so the only way that the shaft with gear will slide is toward the cable side. It appears that the cable side plug holds the spacer against the gear, keeping all in place.

Thanks so very much for that tip and it pretty much has to be the answer. I didn't know about that set of pages and they are really useful. i searched through my original master parts manual but never found a drawing of just that section. Problem declared solved.
