I am having trouble removing the old gear. I don't want to destroy it in the process. I have been using a puller, hooking it behind the bronze retaining plate (ouch) and it doesn't budge. Any suggestions?

Hello Terry67,
I'm not sure how effective a hook type puller is on timing gears. The hook type arms should be at 90 degrees/right angle from puller to item being removed. If your puller diameter is too small and the hook arms are fanned outward, you will lose leverage and pulling force. Use a larger puller. I think that gears usually incorporate bolt holes for using a stud/bolt type puller. Maybe that type of puller is more appropriate for this job.

Thanks, I'll try that next. I wasn't sure if the "formica" material is strong enough to take the pull.

I would not trust using a puller on a fiber gear if you intend to use the gear again. The only safe way is to use a press to remove the gear.
