Is there a specific type of grease that is used in the distributor and water pump grease cup?

In a word, yes. Marine type grease that won't mix with the water.

Lubriplate 115 has been recommended by a few VCCA folks.

Lubriplate 115 is excellent grease to use in your water pump. For the distributor I have found that Sta-Lube white cup grease works the best and it is made for that application and others as well.
