As you can see the Jack-in-the-box is the same model as in pic #1...When I was searching Gene sent me pic #1...Pic #2 is the 48 accessory model, I believe Johnny had posted that pic

old thread 2007 All the pictures from the past are gone but I thought this might bring back memories for Bruce. All us '47 & '48'ers had the same question at one time.

The 1949 Engineering Manual compares the nee stronger 1949 jack to the 1948. It says "The redeigned bumper jack has a larger base for greater stability, and a heaiver column for increased strength. The base is now eight inches square, where as in 1948 it was 7 inches. The column mounting is now off set in the base and the jack handle is designed to work as a lug wrench" Also the post sets into the base rather than just resting on top of it.

Here's Dick's bumper jacks for review...Not sure on this one. I would say jack "A" is 50's unit. Jack "B"..I have never seen the round hole in the base, then again I do not know if I have ever seen a 47 jack...Because it fits in the base maybe its the 1949 model?? ![[Linked Image from i563.photobucket.com]](http://i563.photobucket.com/albums/ss79/chefchevy/Bumper%20Jack/IMG_5164.jpg)

From Chip in 2005
Bumper jack part number 609656 is listed in the 1946, 1947, 1948 and 1949 parts books with the application of 1934-1948, ALL PASS. A different part number is listed for 1949. Earlier books do not contain the 609656 part number. Therefore the conclusion is that 1946, 47, 48 used the same jack. As in other years it is likely that more than one manufacturer made Chevy jacks so small differences are likely.
The above conclusion is reasonable as there were very few differences between the three years.
Mark, if you are a VCCA member you can check with the VCCA tool advisor. Oops that was the advisor. Guess we need to add to his library. Sorry Dave the Agrin

Thanks Bruce for posting the pic of my 2 jacks. It appears to me the base of jack "B" is the same as jack-in-the-box pic you posted earlier (round hole and 4 corner strength humps). I can't make out the shape of the arm that catches the bumper on the jack-in-the-box to see if it is the same as my "B". I welcome other opinions toward which jack (A, B or neither one) would be appropriate for my 47. Thanks; Dick

Russ & Bruce: Jack "B" base is 7" x 7". Bruce: The pic of J.I.B. and pic #1 you posted sure looks like it has a hole in the center for the shaft to sit in to me. I have to leave for several hours. Will check in later today.

OK - The J.I.B. has a diff head and the base has a depression (vs hole) for the shaft to sit in compared to my "B". Are the jacks for 47 & 48 the same as supplied ?
Thanks for the response.

Dick take a look at Chippers post I copied from 2005..He thinks 46-47 &48 are the same...Now I am not 100% positive that the JIB is correct but it is the same as the pic Gene sent me when I was looking for a 48 jack...To really confuse you go down to the thread about the 41 bumper jack and there is also a pic of one the same as the JIB....Its never lost points in judging...FYI the 48 tools are in the green bag

Jack "B" in my opinion is the correct standard Jack for 46-48. I purchased a low mile car with one in the trunk and it fits perfectly to the contour of the bumper. I also bought one that was listed as 48 Chevy jack that is like "B". I would assume using the "A" jack might bend the bumper because the edge is the only point of contact????

Jack A looks like the universal ratcheting jack Chevrolet sold in the parts book. Jack B does look more like what I have seen in (some ?0 1946-1948 cars.
The one sold for replacemt in the parts book never came as standard equipment.

OK, I think I will clean up & paint jack "B" for my 47. If it turns out it is not 100% correct, so be it. Thanks to all of you ( Gene, Russ, Bruce, Johnny) for your input.

Dick I like your jack #B buff the "H" out of the shaft, base & handle, paint the mechanism and be proud...No body said it was not a 47...No one knows anyway??
