Are there specific recommendations for the brand of Positraction Fluid that should be used in a 1966 Chevelle 12 Bolt Posi ?

I called 2 Chevy dealerships and here is what they said today.

#1 Dealer
Use GM #89021671 Lubricant - 80-90 weight - They had no idea if it was correct for positraction. Parts man said that nowhere on the bottle did it state that it was OK to use in posi-rear ends.

#2 Dealer said to use a Gear Lubricant - they didn't know a part number for this. They did say that I should also buy a GM Additive in addition to the Lubricant - GM #88900330

Neither parts guy had a clue what I should buy from them.

i mis-speeled the additive i've used in our corvettes for the last 3 years. its called Quell by piedmont chemical co in dayton ohio> its a derivative of oils from spermaceti whales. years ago i had a midyear vet with posi and bias belted tires. the clutch pack on the posi carrier would intermittently grab and when doing so, would toss the vette all over the road. i tried several different brands of limited slip axle additive concentrates and none worked as well as the Quell. if u have trouble locating quell, Kendall makes an additive but i've not used it. the Quell actually smells like dead fish. i love it and keep a couple 4 ounce bottles on the shelf. mike

The original GM posi. addive and actual gear oil for pois contained whale sperm oil Many years ago it was discontinued due to some reason and GM came out with another additive. A later model Olds I had chattered on shrp turns when hot. The GM additive took care of the problem.
There are some synthetic gear oils today that don't require an additive. Any thing that says for limited slip will work fine.
