Taking motor apart, its obvious theres been a few different hands in here.I dont think they knew anymore about this than i do. First attempt at this, after reffering to the school in session article, ( probly the best thing i ever saw on any forum of any type, much thanks to Ray and others) . My questions are is the plug on back of #4 a std knock out freeze plug to be removed before cleaning, and were there after market heads, made in 25 as i have one dated but no bow tie and non coded date. Also cam gear is larger 13/16 with rub on cover. Ihave another block with both metalic cam and crank gears (5/8 ) .comments answers and questions all appreciated

Leadchunker the plug in the rear is a knock out plug in the water jacket. Yes they did make after market heads. Also the head from a 1914 will fit on a 1926 engine I am told. The date code stamps changed in 1922. You should have casting dates on the block and head something like (D-19-5) which would be April 19, 1925. As far as the timing gear goes; I guess someone else could answer that. Hope this helps.

Allrighty, gonna take that rascal out o thar.jackets are full of rusty mud. Got afew heads and a couple of blocks, just that one of the heads has a little different appearance and the date is not in code, casting # is a little different like a knock off. Thanks for the response

Hi ?, Re the cam gears. The generator driven oil pump models had a metal cam gear, when the oil pump went to the crankcase, a fibre gear was used. You don't say which model you have. The early sixes has a fibre gear that was a little wider (unsure of exact width)but was identical otherwise. It could be used by turning some off the gear and hub.
With a metal cam gear, the engine has a distinctive rattle at idle and quite a whine with some revs applied. I think the fibre gear would have been to quieten things down a little.

Thanks AL, both engines are 25s. Are there any problems running the generator with the fiber gear?

Hi ?, I had a fiber cam gear fail in my '25 at about 18,000 miles so there is not really too much of a problem. However, fiber is not as strong as metal.
Regards Al

Most applications use a steel-fiber-steel. Otherwise the noise will drive you crazy. The 1927 engine is unique, as we have a FIBER crank gear and a STEEL cam gear.
