LoL!! bigl

I would hope that anyone selling one would give all of the known facts when selling a car. It's been published in the industry that production numbers may be incorrect. (Collectible Automobile) I hope the up coming article makes some waves in other publications and puts this to rest. It seems to me that when these cars come up for sale now with the incorrect production numbers, they are often by dealers.

When is the article due?

They will be considered much less "rare" after the article is published. It will at first only be known by VCCA members. Take some time to be more widely recognized. A few will always believe the 300 number or similarly limited production. Most will be dealers that want to hype their inventory.

I believe the story all began with the "50 Years fo Chevrolet" book published 35 years ago.

Would one just consider it as a high end sedan?

If the article is peer reviewed before issue, and contains actual facts the effect on price will be immaterial. However, if the article is published without peer review, and has no more facts than the long previous post then it will be nothing more than another opinion. I expect the G&D Editors will not publish a non-fact based, all be it circumstantially reasonable, article that contradicts decades of information.

The article will be based on pure facts and no opinions. Unfortunately, fellows that own 1929 convertible landaus don't want to see the article published because their "rare" cars will then be common place....as most of us long standing old timers in the hobby already know. Besides, I'm sure that many current owners of convertible landaus will choose to ignore the facts anyway and continue to believe in their dream worlds that only "300" were made.

I don't see the value of these cars dropping very much over this article for a couple of reasons.

1. It is still a beautiful car… and a convertible.

2. It is still rare.

3. It is still a unique 1/2 year offering body style.

4. They never were priced with such a premium as to make them have far to drop in value. Because there are so many of them, they come up for sale often enough for a market value to be established.

As for #2… It is still a rare car. If 8500 or even 10k is the production number arrived at, I don't believe that there are more than 300 of them out there today. With the old rumoured number of 300 produced, the argument was that it was such a beautiful car that everyone treasured them and squirrelled them away. Well, the same number of them still exist. It just means that 8200+ went to the crusher, or got dropped off in Berlin and Tokyo… and we're not expecting those ones back! It still costs a boat load to restore one, and you're likely to be the only one at your local cruise night driving one. Remember that when you park beside an entire row of $60 000 '67-'69 Camaros at your next cruise...

Dog, I appreciate you and rely on you technical expertise, but your opinion about what IL owners want and what they will do is an opinion, not fact. The difference between an opinion and a fact is what someone that reads G&D expects from a publication that represents our hobby. An article that causes endless debate will effect G&Ds reputation more than the value of a car to an owner. A fact is that I for one do not care what the value of my IL is. I bought my IL 50 years ago, and it will be in my garage after I am gone.

I don't think we ever had decades of information to establish a 296 or 300 production run. Anywhere it was ever published was not a GM source of information. Another thing to look at is International production. Often production statistics were published using USA produced cars only. We built this car up here in Canada as well, and I know of at least 6 of them (seen in various sale listings, websites, 1 museum car, and 2 VCCA owners). If only 300 were built all together, how on earth did enough get built to give us 5 Canadian survivors in a country that wouldn't even be a good choice for a "luxury" convertible! I'm fairly certain that our own production numbers were likely a couple of hundred, and on top of whatever was produced in the USA.

CuChiRVN: In doing our research we have already received strong objections from several IL owners who do not want the research to be completed or published, therefore, what I said is based on fact and it is not just an opinion.

As far as decades of "information" is concerned....what information? What "decades of information" you are referring to? Do you have any documented evidence whatsoever that has appeared over the past decades to support the 300 production figure? If so, I'm sure that we would all like to see it.

In our research we are not interested in value, only with the actual production figures of the IL. The market place will determine the value one way or the other.

I suggest that you wait until the research is completed and the article is published with the facts before you offer any other speculation. However, if you do have any documented information that would aid us in our research we sure would like hearing from you. Your support in this endeavor would be greatly appreciated.
