I have never seen a coupe used for any government use. They always choose the lowest priced 4 door. If they did ever purchase a coupe I am sure that it would have been a low priced Stylemaster business coupe..(no back saet). There is a Fisher Body ID plate on the right side of the firewall. It will list style number, body number, trim number and paint number.....what does it say?If it were an Air Force car it would have had a special paint color and the paint number would read XXXX.

It is a stylemaster and the #'s are 47-1227B under style the body#is 760 and the trim# is 129 and the paint #is 347 but the Air Force put a stencil on it # P1829 The car what is left of the paint is white over blue. You are right it has no back seat and I thought that they were just used for like for the old fuller brush guys or kirby that used to go door to door, so they could carry their equiptment back there. Like I said I tried to find out about this car for about a year now and have found nothing but dead ends.

Gene, I've seen (the remains of) two early 50's station wagons previously used by the military - one Army and one Air Force. Also, sometimes "special use" vehicles are purchased. My brother drove an Air Force Camaro on a runway to "spot the gound" for a U2 spy plane that was landing. (The pilot can't see how close he is to the ground so the car runs along side to keep him informed.) DCMatt

Paint #347 is Battleship gray.A very common 1947 color. Was a medium/dark metalic gray.If the factory would have painted it any other color it would not have had that number....and Army/Navy and Air Force cars had special colors...now there are always exceptions. That color did not hold up well and many were repainted after a few years.
And yes, the government did use some wagons.

I found this coupe in a farmers field and I had been looking for a coupe for a long time. The man that owned it had died and his kids sold the car to me, and they didn't know anything about it. Like I had told you what is left on the paint job (biggest part is rust) and white over blue even under the hood where the stencil is, but what puzzels me about this car is that all the window and the tail lights and head lights are still in tact it has one bullet hole in the rear next to the back window and it goes through to the front seat and through it, as if the target was the driver. Thats why I would like to know if this car was in any action or what. I talked to some mvp people and they told me that it would be hard to trace it, after our govern ment is finishe with equipment like cars and trucks they don't keep track of it anymore.

I have a 1934,1939,1950, 1957 and a Corvair convertible. I started life working in a large Chevrolet Dealership in 1950 when 1947s were coming in as used cars.Left the dealer in 1977. Many of the '47s being traded in required repainting due to the way the metalic colors went dull....Also many required an engine overhaul to be a first class car for the used car lot.Replacing the front shocks was also common by 40,000 miles because folks were to cheap to have them filled once a year.

I don't know what kind of "action" a '47 Chevy coupe might have seen - especially one with no back seat . Korea would have been the closest conflict... There was an Army Air Force training base at Coffeyville, KS during WWII and in the years following. That's not too far from you, right? You might start your research there. Keep in mind that the USAF was called the Army Air Force prior to Oct. '47. Good luck. DCMatt

DCMatt.........Thank you for your input , yes Coffeyville Ks is real close to where I found the car. but who knows what happened to it. yea I thought korea also but like you said why a coupe? I thought it was odd that it has only one bullet hole right through the drivers seat. You know when a car sits like that in a field it becomes a target for every nut with a gun. I also found out about the Army air force from some mvp people. I will try further research and again thank to you and Chev nut for your info.
