No where in any of the prior posts has the discussion veered to a discussion of dollars for a set of 5 . Your the one looking at prices on a set of 5 nobody else is. From the $900 cost your dealing with $180 in purchase costs per tire. If that seems right to you , buy them , if not , continue looking at prices on the net for them until your satisfied that's the amount of money you want to spend. mike lynch ........

I'm in the process of getting 5 new tires for my 36 Master. I don't mind paying good money for a good / quality set of tires but I didn't see any post here on name brand or vendors who sell quality products. And yes I am looking at white walls. Thanks for the information about the double whites. Does anybody have any input on which brands have served them well without worrying about the whitewall issue?

I had three sets of 5.50X17 tires on my 1934 Master over the years. My last set were Firestones. They seemed to wear well, white stayed white, and I was happy with them. The only problem was the Firestones run a bit oversized and I had a problem closing the tire cover on the spare. I also have Firestones on my 1950 (seconed set) and like them also. My other choice would be the Goodrich. I had them on two cars but not the 17" size.

When I ordered new tyres for my 1935 Standard I ordered 4 x5.25/5.50 x17 and 1 x4.00/4.25x17 for the spare as I realised the 5.25/5.50 spare would not fit in the metal tyre cover. My thoughts were that it was better to have a fully inflated slightly undersize spare than a half inflated full size in the unlikely chance of having a flat. I did have to glue some foam rubber to the inside of the cover to take up the looseness. By the way Mike Australia does not have a VAT tax. I think it is the English that have that.

Actually the spare is a 4.50x17 Excelsior. The other advantage is the price is a little cheaper.

If VCCA judging is considered you will loose points if all 5 (or 6) tires are not of the same brand. The Standard originally came with a 5.25 tire so the 5.50 is already an over size. The old .25 size tires were discontinued during WWII. There was like 5.25x17, 6.25x16 sizes combined with 5.50 and 6.50 after the war.

Curious - Is there any issue of these oversize 5.50 tires fitting into a fender well if you do not use a metal cover? 1936 Standard specifically.

I have to remove some air in order to get the bare 5.50 tire in my 33 Eagle with dual sidemounts.

Has anybody purchased the Lucas Olympic 5.25-5.50x17? I would like to get some accurate measurements from them as opposed to advertised measurements. I found the Firestones to be 2" larger than advertised. & almost 5" in diameter than the tire the car left the factory with....Joe

Actually if the judges are in tip top judging condition, only the four tires on the ground must match many years of Chevrolets. That is surely the case for 1929 and early 30s (maybe later) as the factory supplied spare was only a wheel or rim without a tire. The tire was supplied by the delivering dealer if the customer wanted one. Or the customer found a spare tire on his own.
It would be interesting to know what years had a factory supplied matching spare tire. That is for passenger as well as trucks (both 1/2 ton and larger).
How Sweet the roar of a Chevy four!

What's the solution for side mounts. Other than keeping an under inflated tire in the wheel well. Are all brands about the same or do some measure a little smaller when inflated.
