The frame in my 38 is very rusty. I have searched it over using a wire brush and magnifying glass trying to find a VIN/Serial/any number??? and found nothing. Have I lost the numbers to rust or were they ever there

The numbers were never on the frame. JYD "Car Serial Number was used." My Cowl tag has no VIV or serial it shows "Car No. 21HB06...... was that in the frame if so where. I want Chev Nut to be correct??

"21 HB 06" represents the first few digits and letters in the Car Number (aka serial number). 21 = Janesville assembly plant, HB = Master, 06 = June assembly date. There should be several other numbers after the 06 which are the sequential serial number.

In 1938 the serial number was a plate on the right side of the cowl....visable when hood is opened. There is also a Fisher Body plate at that location. It will show body style,paint and trim number, etc.

Thank to all responding. The conclusion is there are no numbers on the frame that DMV should be looking for. All registration numbers are on the cowl tag.

I have a Holden bodied 38 Standard Roadster,(leaf springs in the front). It is missing all of its cowl tags because the cowl was rusted out and was replaced by a 38 sedan cowl though the top of the windscreen was salvaged and swapped over. I do however have a frame (chassis to us) number. The frame of course came from the USA. The number is on the LH side, outside face above the mount for the rear end of the spring. It is not easy to see as it is shallow and was painted over. The only way I could read it was to block sand back to bare metal which leaves the paint in the grooves. Even then it is difficult to read. Mine is 38 B 73 or 75. I believe that this was done in the USA because the frames would have been shipped painted and these numbers were stamped to bare metal. Does this have meaning to you people?

Terry I believe most RHD Chevs that came to Australia came out of Canada. My 38 is stamped the same as yours and to my knowledge it was stamped in Australia is why it is only lightly stamped to prevent distorting the chassis even though that isnt very likely. Tony
