Today's SEMA news:

http://view.message.sema.org/?j=fe4...97&utm_campaign=DrivingForce&r=0

A recruiting effort initiated in 2015 has once again brought an impressive number of lawmakers into the State Automotive Enthusiast Leadership Caucus. With 151 new members signing up so far this year, the group now numbers more than 700 members representing all 50 states. Founded in 2005 and supported by the SEMA Action Network (SAN), the caucus is designed as a non-partisan group of state legislators whose common thread is a love and appreciation for automobiles. To follow is the complete list of those who have joined this year. (Read More)

SOLON,

Enough already! I think we get your position by now.

Please school you feelings about ethanol. It is what it is. It is an additive to gasoline that helps users in avoiding even heavier dependance on imported oil. There may be some drawbacks to ethanol use but it is minor and not near as negative as you and your like-thinking buddies claim.

There are thousands of gallons with 10% ethanol used in the U.S. every day with no harmful effects. Old cars can safely use it too. If allowed to sit in a bowl or a thank or in rubber lines there may be a shorting of life. A very minor consideration and not near enough to warrant the high protest of those who, like you, stand on the soapbox and cry foul. Mercy!

Give us a break. We understand your position and more propaganda will not impact our opinions any more than is has by now.

Good day and I hope you have the best time you can before we get ethanol at 15% mixture. Agrin

Charlie,

This is America and we get to say what is on our mind. He's not the only one concerned and trying to rally support to ban ethanol. Various motorcycle enthusiast magazines and the American Motorcyclist Association are doing the same thing.

Are you aware that ethanol is a net energy waster? It takes more energy to make it than what it yields when it is burned. That's in addition to the damage it does to some engines and the vapor lock problems it causes.

All members... Solan is posting information from a source that helps support various issues for all vintage car hobbyists. The fuel debate is simply one of the areas that they monitor your government's actions on.

Let's not turn this thread into a personal attack on Solon, as he is merely passing the newsletter on to us. Let's keep in mind that there are many opinions on the fuel issue, and none of them are either right or wrong... they are just opinions. If there is further discussion in this thread, let's keep it to the topic and not make it personal.

Bill has been notified of this thread and is out there touring somewhere this week. Let's not make him take the time to come back here and babysit us!!

Brewster is right, Solans postings are generally only links to SEMA. They interest me as the Aus Government often follows what the US government does and I dont always agree with either. It is better to have advance info on what is likely to happen.
I would not appreciate Bill closing this thread down due to a few misguided comments.

Well, I just returned home and am trying to catch up.
(The NW Meet was very good, by the way.)
carbana

Yes, I agree that the discussion needs to continue. It may not be what is CURRENTLY being done to the gas that is important, as to what is NEXT. I know that I have replaced rubber in nearly every one of my vintage cars due to this change, so my first-hand experience is that it DID cost me additional time and money.

I'd ask that people don't attack the individuals who post in this thread. And I'd ask that people who post, try to post well-documented facts and not wild claims or fear-mongering. We all are affected by this "shift" in our products.

It is entirely possible that ALL cars will be electric or hydrogen powered within the next 25 years and then this topic will be irrelevant. Think about that. If that's even remotely true, then why aren't we talking about that instead of the last declining days of gasoline as our primary power source.

It seems to me that our VINTAGE cars are rapidily being ANTIQUES faster than we recognize.

Keep the comments on track, on topic. Otherwise... well, you know the rest.

Good points about the personal stuff. I don't know who the culprit is but he ought to be taken out and shot. How dare he.

I praise Solon for his posts. They give me something to ponder and take into account for the old car hoppy in general. Keep up the good work Solon. Where would be be without you?

Here's another take on ethanol in gasoline that is worth pondering.....

http://ethanallen.org/commentary-repeal-the-ethanol-mandate/

So you see Solan, we actually have people here in the U.S. that want this ethanol junk taken out of our gasoline!!

News from SEMA. They follow up what many in US should be aware of are happening in the politics as to threats against our vehicle hobby. Why not support them by joining?

And the ethanol is just as bad for elderly and old vehicles (and even new engines) as before, what ever my opponents here are telling us. You will regret the day you only can drive on E 15 in a car not built for that gas blend. And if you were so sure about your arguments pro ethanol you would not be so annoyed and occupied with asking me to stop my postings. Repeating my message makes some more people here think about their own cars future lives linked to E 10-15.

Remarkably I am not against ethanol itself, but against the system of not having a choice to avoid using the ethanol blend when many arguments and even proofs tell us that liquid in gas most likely can damage our old vehicles and make our driving unsafe. Understood?

What with news of development of self-driving vehicles, some of our members are concerned about future legislation that may be used to mandate such vehicles and restrict our ability to drive our Vintage Chevrolets.

I feel the entire concept of self driving vehicles is more of a financial issue that we do not realize yet. I personally feel that this is directed to the trucking industry, where trucks on the interstate will be self driving. There is no profit in making the private owned vehicle self driving, however how would UPS and FedEx (just examples) fair?
I-95 through most of New Jersey is just one huge complex of distribution centers, I-78 from Allentown to Harrisburg the same. These centers just popped up in the last 8 years. Not that cost would go down on any of this, after all the price of fuel has been cut in half and the cost to send a package is the same.

Not only are prices the same but many carriers still list a "fuel surcharge" in addition to their rate.

My question on the self drive vehicles is "who controls them?" and "how easy is it to hack the controls?" considering I have seen a video (may have been staged) where this has happened.

Hello, 41specialdeluxe and all other friends.

I really hope (and pray) we car entusiasts will be allowed and able to continue driving our oldies for another 20 - 30 years before all transport may be done by automatic running vehicles. In Europe they have started trial distance driving with automatic driven trucks and with some success already. But the big difference for most people will be the coming change from driving/controlling your own car to call for a taxi cab/bus driving without a chauffeur, also transporting other people on the way to your destination.

For me it is a kind of "back to the future". I think I may be driving for another 10 years before new regulations will turn our vehicles into nails or into museum items. When the day comes and I cannot drive as freely as now, it will be little fun left. I hope I am not right for still many years from now but instead predicting a coming scene far too soon.

Anyway, we are close to Christmas time and Santa is on his way, whatever the other kinds of traffic is like around the world. So, 41 Charlie, if you are able to join me in Lake Tahoe next August I like to invite you specially for a friendly beer and bar talk in the main hotel. Hope to meet you there, and all of my other Chevrolet friends as well, of course.

There was a driverless car trial conducted in Adelaide South Australia last week. By what I heard it was not a success, on a 100yard course the car hit 3 or 4 stationary objects.
Volvo are also down here studying the behaviour of kangaroos in proximity of the road so they build into their crash avoidance system, I wish them luck.

The future is already here!!!

In Tripolis Greece Is since a few months the first buses that actualy drive a 4 kilometer route (2,5 Miles)
Its 2 small electric buses that drive completely by-themselves and stop in different places to collect and leave passengers.Shortly they are going to be 6 ,if not already.
This is an international first supported from the European community and it is going to last for 4 years.
Here is a link to a related report in English,
